Q&A with Jessi Malay

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

Hi!! I’m Jessi Malay, born and raised in Los Angeles California. I’m a wife and mother, and digital entrepreneur. When I was little my dream was to become a singer! I actually scored a recording contract with Jive Records when I was 14 with a pop group I was in, and then a solo contract with Warner Bros Records at 18. I went back to school and graduated from UCLA in my early twenties while I started a production company with my best friend. I then started recording music again independently and toured the country with Danity Kane (remember them?!) At that time, I also started a fashion and beauty blog as a side hobby but when it started gaining real traction, I decided to pursue it full time and with my husband’s help, made it a full time, profitable career! We’ve worked with some of my dream brands like Bvlgari, Marc Jacobs, Laura Mercier, and Dolce and Gabbana to name a few! I’m most grateful for my job now because it allows my husband and I to work together, and we can work from home and spend lots of time with our daughter.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN INFLUENCER?

I was incredibly inspired by the original girls that were doing it like Aimee Song, Camila Coelho, and Julie Sarinana, that were sharing their love of fashion, beauty, and interiors and creating powerful careers in which they were their own bosses, completely in control of their destinies. Being in the music industry was a hard reality in which I did not have that kind of creative control or freedom over my own art. So the idea of being an influencer was very appealing for that reason. Then when I started growing a following of my own, I really enjoyed the direct personal connection with thousands of other women that had similar passions to me and it motivated me further.

WHAT'S THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT BEING AN INFLUENCER? … WHATS THE MOST REWARDING PART?

The most challenging part is that I am literally ALWAYS working, even though it’s fun work, I never turn off.. from early in the morning to late at night, even on vacation, I’m working and constantly shooting/sharing content. The most rewarding aspect is the personal connection with my followers, and being my own boss.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Eclectic, modern, chic but simple, and always with a touch of glam.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOUR FOLLOWERS DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

As put together as my home seems on IG, I have one junk room that’s a complete disaster and really embarrassing actually… I’m constantly trying to organize it and I swear it just gets worse and worse.

SO WE HEAE YOU’RE ALSO AN ANGEL INVESTOR – WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN COMPANIES OR BRANDS TO INVEST IN?

A product we would use ourselves and can help promote organically across our channels. Most importantly a founder/founders we believe in.

WHAT ARE SOME WORDS OF WISDOM YOU’LL PASS ON TO YOUR DAUGHTER, ALESSANDRA, AS SHE GETS OLDER?

A person is a person, no matter what they believe in, what they look like, or where they’re from. We are all God’s children and we all need to treat each other with love and respect.

I absolutely love my BG Stack.. I had been wanting a few, simple rings that are dainty, can be worn everyday, stacked together or mixed in with my other pieces. Love the mix of gold, diamonds, and turquoise! I’ll have and wear these rings always, they’re timeless!

WHEN YOU’RE PURCHASING JEWELRY, WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Quality above all else. I wear my jewelry daily, from events, to running around with Ále, on vacation in the water and on the beach! So I need pieces that stand the test of time. Design is also incredibly important to me and these BG pieces I can wear with anything and everything.

WHAT PIECE OF JEWELRY IN YOUR OPINION MAKES THE PERFECT GIFT?
I personally love receiving rings, especially from my husband, to commemorate special events or times of life. But a necklace makes a great gift for anyone. It’s a statement, comfortable to wear, and you don’t need to worry about sizing.
