Knowledge & Care
All your questions,
answered.
Everything you need to know about 14K solid gold - from what it is, to how to care for it, to why it lasts a lifetime.
Our Gold
We get it - it sounds confusing! But the two terms describe different things. Solid gold refers to the metal itself: real 14k gold all the way through, not plated over brass or silver. Hollow refers to the construction: the piece is built like a shell rather than a solid block, but the gold is still just as pure.
The result is 14k solid gold jewelry that is lighter, more comfortable, and more affordable - letting you build a bigger, bolder look that is perfect for everyday wear and layering.

Recycled gold is real gold sourced from existing materials - old jewelry, scrap metal, and industrial byproducts - instead of being newly mined. It gets melted down, refined, and crafted into new pieces, so it looks, performs, and lasts exactly like freshly mined gold.
All of our 14k solid gold jewelry at Baby Gold is made with recycled gold. It is the same quality you love, but with a smaller environmental footprint.

At Baby Gold, our 14k solid gold jewelry is never mass produced. Every piece is handmade in the US by our expert jewelers. Some sizes, stone customizations, or designs are made specifically for your order - which is why some of your Baby Gold jewelry pieces may take a little extra time to arrive.
Made to order means better craftsmanship, less waste, and a piece that was made with care, just for you. And we think that's well-worth the wait.

Many of our Baby Gold pieces come in 3 metal options: 14k Yellow Gold, 14k White Gold, and 14k Rose Gold. The karat tells you how much gold is in a piece. The color tells you what it is alloyed with. All three are real 14k gold, just mixed differently:
Yellow gold - the classic. Alloyed with silver and copper, it holds that warm, rich tone most people picture when they think of gold jewelry.
White gold - alloyed with white metals like palladium or silver, then usually finished with rhodium plating for a bright, platinum-like appearance.
Rose gold - alloyed with a higher percentage of copper, giving it that warm blush tone. A perennial favorite for stacking and layering.

Vermeil (pronounced "ver-MAY") is sterling silver with a layer of gold on top - at least 10k and 2.5 microns thick per FTC standards. It is a step above basic gold plating, but it is not solid gold. With daily wear, the gold layer eventually wears through, exposing the silver base underneath.
Solid 14k gold jewelry is gold through and through. No base metal, no plating, nothing to wear off. It is a fundamentally different product - one that is built to last a lifetime.

Care & Wear
Solid 14k gold is durable enough for everyday wear, but it is best to remove your fine gold jewelry before sweating, swimming, or applying products. Lotion, perfume, and sweat can build up on gold over time and dull the finish. Diamonds and pearls are especially sensitive - pearls can yellow from the alcohols in fragrance. A tough workout can also put stress on delicate chains and cause hollow gold pieces to dent.
The golden rule of fine jewelry: last thing on, first thing off. Put your 14k solid gold jewelry on after your skincare and fragrance routine, and take it off before bed or the gym.

Caring for your 14k solid gold jewelry comes down to two habits:
Cleaning: A gentle weekly clean keeps gold jewelry sparkling.
1. Apply Baby Gold Foaming Jewelry Cleaner to jewelry, leave on for 30 seconds, gently work in with the Baby Gold cleaner brush, rinse foam off well and dry using a non-abrasive fabric.
2. Click the Baby Gold Fine Jewelry Cleaning Pen until you notice purple liquid, apply to jewelry and then rinse off well, dry using Baby Gold Polishing Cloth. Rinse off brush after each use to avoid clogging.
It is important to use a gentle fabric to avoid scratching your jewelry. Our Polishing Cloth is infused with a gentle and effective polishing compound that will bring back the luster and shine to your jewelry. Great for use on gold, silver, platinum, and other precious metals.
You can grab the whole set here: Baby Gold Jewelry Cleaner Bundle Kit. Using the right tools does make a big difference.
Storage: Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or lined jewelry case to prevent scratching and tangles. The Baby Gold Jewelry Travel Case is a great everyday option.
With consistent care, solid gold jewelry can stay beautiful for decades.

Tangled gold necklaces are frustrating but fixable. Here is how to safely detangle 14k gold chains without causing damage:
1. Lay the chain flat on a smooth, soft surface.
2. Never pull - this can stretch or break delicate links.
3. Use two fine pins or needles to gently work the knot loose from the center outward.
4. For stubborn knots, a small drop of baby oil can help loosen the links. Wipe clean and rinse after.
If a chain breaks in the process, we can help! Reach out to our team at support@babygold.com.

We recommend leaving your gold jewelry on shore. Saltwater is more corrosive than fresh water and can visibly wear on the metal, dull the surface, and weaken prong settings on stone pieces over time. Sand is also abrasive and can cause micro-scratches on polished gold.
If your gold jewelry does get exposed to the ocean, follow the instructions to use our Baby Gold Jewelry Cleaning Tools to protect against any further damage and restore your jewelry to its former shine.

Dull gold jewelry is almost always a buildup issue. Lotion, dry shampoo, body oil, and soap residue all leave an invisible film on 14k gold that mutes its shine over time. The good news? It is completely reversible.
If you wear your gold jewelry daily, a quick weekly clean will keep it looking new.
Make sure to be gentle with cleaning to avoid damaging any 14k gold pieces or scratching diamonds, sapphires, or any other stones. For professional cleaning and polishing, reach out to us at support@babygold.com.

Yes, over time. The alcohols in perfume and the oils in lotion can build up on gold jewelry and dull its finish. Pearls are especially vulnerable - they are porous and can absorb chemicals that cause yellowing or surface damage. Diamonds can also lose their sparkle under a film of product residue.
The fix is simple: apply skincare and fragrance first, let everything absorb or dry, then put your gold jewelry on last. That one habit makes a real difference in how long your pieces stay brilliant.

Styling & Layering
The key to layering gold necklaces without looking cluttered is choosing necklaces with varying lengths. Different lengths will showcase each necklace, while also helping to avoid tangles.
Here's a good starting point:
1. A Choker or Collar: These usually range from 14 to 16 inches and fall above the collarbone.
*Sizing on these can be different for everyone. We recommend measuring first to get a comfortable size for you.
2. A Mid-Length chain: the perfect length for these is about 18 inches.
3. A longer pendant: 22 to 24 inches.
The spacing creates visual separation so each piece reads clearly.
Beyond length, vary the chain styles. A delicate box chain, a paperclip link, and a curb chain worn together look intentional. Mixing yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold in the same layer stack is also very much on trend right now.

Yes, and it looks great! Mixed metals are one of the biggest jewelry trends right now, and the old rule of matching your metals has largely been retired.
The key is intention. Either commit to the mix and wear yellow, rose and/or white gold together on the same wrist or neckline, or use a white gold piece in a yellow gold stack for a little accent.

A great gold ring stack mixes different band widths, textures, and ring types. Here's a stack of our favorites:
1. Thick Stacking Band - solid and thick. The perfect base.
2. Loose Twist Ring - dainty and textured for some fun contrast.
3. Add a stone or signet, like our Solitaire Bezel Diamond Ring or Oval Signet Ring (or both!).
You also do not have to keep everything on one finger. Spreading rings across two or three fingers, or leaving some fingers bare entirely, creates a more modern, effortless look than loading up a single finger.
There are no rules here and this is just your starting point. You can slowly collect rings that match your style. To help you out, here is our favorite Stacking Rings. The best ring stack is the one you reach for every day.

Gold is a precious metal that has historically held long-term value. And gold is a unique investment because you can actually wear and enjoy it while it maintains or grows in value. You can't exactly adorn an outfit with stocks...
We may be a little biased, but a wearable investment is worth every penny.
