Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose the Right Size

Finding the right necklace length makes all the difference. Here's everything you need to know to shop with confidence.

✨Not sure where to start? Most people love 16" or 18." They're the most versatile lengths and look great on all neck sizes.

14-15": Choker Fit

A snug fit that sits right at the base of the neck. We highly recommend measuring first - this is a very fitted length and isn't the right fit for everyone.

16": Collarbone

Sits right at or slightly above the collarbone. One of our most popular lengths and pairs beautifully with a second, longer layer.

18": Upper-Mid Chest

Most Common Length. Falls right at the middle of the chest. This length is flattering on everyone and works with basically any neckline.

20": Mid Chest

Falls a bit lower than 18", sitting closer to the center of the chest. Great for pendants or statement pieces you want to draw attention to.

22-24": Long

Sits below the chest, closer to the sternum. Perfect for layering, longer pendants, or a more relaxed, bohemian look.

Other Things to Consider:

  1. Chunky Chains will fit shorter than dainty or thinner chains of the same length.
  2. Beaded necklaces will also fit shorter than dainty or thinner chains of the same length.
  3. Pendant necklaces are measured by chain length, so the pendant itself will sit lower than the length selected.
  4. Adjustable sizes: if you come across a necklace with 2 sizes (ex. 14" - 16"), that means the necklace includes an extender. Adjustable necklaces are a great option if you're unsure about length or want to wear the same necklace a few different ways.

Need a little more length? Try a necklace extender to adjust any necklace to your perfect fit.

Measuring at Home

The easiest way is to measure a necklace you already own and decide whether you want the same length, longer, or shorter. For the most accurate result, use a necklace with a similar chain style to what you're shopping for.

If you do not have a necklace to measure, a piece of string or yarn works just as well. All you need after that is a ruler.

Don't have a ruler? Print one out here.

How to measure necklace length at home

  1. Use your necklace, yarn, or string to measure out your desired length.
  2. Lay it flat in a straight line. If measuring a necklace, remember the clasp is included in the total length.
  3. Place your ruler alongside it to find the length in inches.

Note: all necklace lengths are in inches, not centimeters.
